Frequently asked questions
How many sessions will I need?
This can really vary between individuals, depending on their needs. As rough general guide, between 8-12 sessions is a good starting point. You may feel after just a few sessions you feel ready to continue on your own, or you may prefer long-term support.
We will check in on how you feel you are progressing at regular intervals to ensure you have the right number of sessions.
How long does a session last?
The counselling session will last for 50 minutes. This allows for a few minutes at the beginning and end of the session to welcome, get settled, and say goodbye.
Most people prefer to have one session per week, although this may vary depending your personal needs and wishes.
Is counselling confidential?
For the most part, yes. There are a few ethical and legal exceptions to this however, for example if you were to disclose that someone was at risk of serious harm.
I see a supervisor regularly and discuss my work as a counsellor to ensure I am supporting you as best I can. However I do not disclose your identity, so confidentiality is always maintained.
What is a session like?
You are in charge! Person-centred therapy is non-directive, so I won't tell you what to do or what you need to talk about. You are free to explore whatever is on your mind at that time. That's not to say you have to do all the work- through gently challenging your thoughts and ideas, I can help you to understand yourself and your situations more deeply, and help you to figure out when and why certain thoughts and feelings might not be serving you well.
Many clients are happy to simply talk during our sessions. Others prefer to express themselves in different ways, such as through art or writing, and I am happy to explore this with you. When appropriate, I can guide you through mindfulness and meditation exercises, if this is something that you are comfortable with.
I currently offer on-line sessions, using the Google Meet platform. I use the paid version, which meets security and compliance requirements set by the BACP.
How much does it cost?
Sessions cost £55. A discounted rate of £45 is available for students.
I accept cash or bank transfer.
What age groups or types of people do you work with?
I work with a wide range of people, ages 14 and above. For clients below the age of 16, I require parental knowledge and consent. Please note that for under 16s, the same confidentiality standards apply; I will only share information with parents if the client gives their consent, or if I have safeguarding concerns.
