Background and Approach

I completed my MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy in 2019. My core training is in something called person centred therapy- a non-directive type of therapy that puts your needs first; you're the 'expert' in you, so you're in charge! I have completed additional training in child and adolescent mental health and compassion-focused therapy, as well as lots of continued professional development on a range of mental health topics.
While my approach is underpinned by solid, evidence-based training, the most important thing for me is the relationship we build together. This is what enables you to feel comfortable and yet challenged at the same time. I'm not a robot who will just sit in silence, making notes, and nodding along! I'm a real person seeking to build a genuine connection with my clients, and it's this connection that makes all the difference.
Alongside my private practice work, I have worked in a variety of settings and I currently run the counselling service at a large sixth form college. So believe me when I say I've seen it all- I'm totally un-shockable! And most importantly, completely non-judgemental.
On a personal note, I have experienced periods of anxiety and depression since I was a teenager; I know how difficult it can be, because I've been there. I know how intimidating reaching out for support can feel, and making you feel comfortable is my top priority.
As a busy working mum, I also know that life can be messy! I can't promise you a perfect, stress free life (sorry!). But I can help you navigate the ups and downs, so you feel equipped and empowered to deal with whatever life may throw at you.

Compassion- focused therapy
My core training, and the heart of my practice. It focuses on the person, not the "problem". It is non-directive, so you are in charge! I won't tell you what to think, feel or do. I'll work alongside you, providing the right conditions to help you work things out for yourself.
When we struggle with anxiety and low mood, we often turn on ourselves in an attempt to 'bully' ourselves into feeling better. This never really works, and the reseach shows that learning to be compassionate towards yourself is a much more effective way to affect positive change.
Working with adolescents
Mindfulness
Alongside my private practice, I work part time as the lead counsellor at a 6th form college, and previously worked as a counsellor at a high school, so I have a wealth of experience working with young people as well as adults. I work with teenagers aged 14 and over.
It's not for everyone, but mindfulness and meditation have been proven to have a positive impact on mental health and overall well-being. I can help you to gently introduce it if you've never tried it before, or support you in using it therapeutically if it's already part of your routine!

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I change"
Carl Rogers, the founder of Person-centred Therapy
Person-centred therapy was founded in the 1940s by the American psychologist Carl Rogers who believed that, given the right conditions, a person can reach their full potential and become their true and authentic self. The counsellor facilitates this process by creating the right conditions needed for positive growth, which include empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard.
